SYNOPSIS

{ENG}This documentary film attempts to offer a view - on the controversial and fascinating figure of Gustavo Adolfo Rol, the most indecipherable and fascinating enigma of the twentieth century. "His capacities are so incredible, even to overcome the other's faculty to be amazed" ... so Federico Fellini said of him.

Born in Turin in the early twentieth century, Rol soon became famous for the extraordinary and inexplicable faculties that those who had seen him in action attributed to him: the power to transmute matter, to see in distant places, to read the future and the thoughts of men.

He was called a magician, esotericist, thaumaturge, but on his own he never accepted any of these definitions, declaring that he considered what he called "his experiments" as nothing more than the practical manifestation of an innate ability that all men possess, and that - according to him - one day anyone of us will be able to use these faculties.

Through a punctual reconstruction of the most significant stages of his long life, and through the testimonies of friends who knew and followed him on his human and spiritual journey, the viewer is led to discover the incredible yet extraordinarily normal world that enveloped this very unique character.

Through the voices of those who witnessed his activities, sometimes emotionally moved, sometimes filled with the most absolute wonder, always full of affection at the memory of Mr. Rol as a man, depth is given to this amazing character who while navigating the whole life in the vast ocean of the inexplicable never ceased to be "an ordinary person", an individual fully inserted in everyday life and in the society of his time.

Space is given also to the "skeptical" point of view, with interviews from those who argue that Rol's miraculous operations were nothing more than skilful sleight of hand, and that his refusal to "be studied" by official science must be ascribed precisely to the awareness of being actually a creator of illusions.

Suspended between biography, reportage and reconstruction, the documentary builds an "ascending" path, certainly bringing the viewer ever closer to the heart of what Rol's life and thought have meant for all those who have come into contact with him, to the point of being able to raise an deep question on the true nature of his faculties. Today's science, in particular through quantum physics, is confronting itself in recent years with the prospect of studying the so-called "paranormal" phenomena from a totally new angle, and with the possibility of giving plausible explanations to "mysterious" events. Rol's world of extraordinary manifestations, will perhaps in a day not far from now be the object of study of the most advanced of the sciences?

{ITA}Questo film-documentario tenta di offrire una visuale – sulla controversa e affascinante figura di Gustavo Adolfo Rol, l'enigma più indecifrabile e fascinoso del XX secolo. “Sono talmente enormi le sue possibilità, da superare anche l’altrui facoltà di stupirsene”... così disse di lui Federico Fellini.

Nato a Torino agli inizi del Novecento, Rol divenne presto famoso per le straordinarie e inspiegabili facoltà che quanti lo avevano visto in azione gli attribuivano: il potere di trasmutare la materia, di vedere in luoghi lontani, di leggere il futuro e i pensieri degli uomini.

Fu chiamato mago, veggente, esoterista, taumaturgo, ma per proprio conto non accettò mai nessuna di queste definizioni, dichiarando di considerare quelli che chiamava “i suoi esperimenti” come nulla di più che la manifestazione pratica di una capacità innata che tutti gli uomini possiedono, e che – a detta sua – un giorno chiunque di noi sarà in grado di utilizzare.

Attraverso una ricostruzione puntuale delle tappe più significative della sua lunga vita, e attraverso le testimonianze degli amici che lo hanno conosciuto e seguito nel suo percorso umano e spirituale, lo spettatore è condotto per mano alla scoperta del mondo incredibile eppure straordinariamente quotidiano che avvolgeva questo singolarissimo personaggio.

Tramite le voci di quanti sono stati testimoni della sua attività, talvolta commosse, talvolta colme della più assoluta meraviglia, ma sempre dense di emozione e affetto al ricordo di Rol come uomo, vengono dati profondità e spessore alla figura, che pur navigando per tutta la vita nel vasto oceano dell’inspiegabile non smise mai di essere “una persona comune”, un individuo pienamente inserito nella quotidianità e nella società del suo tempo.

Non viene trascurato nemmeno il filone “oppositivo”, con interventi di quanti sostengono che le operazioni miracolose di Rol altro non erano che abilissimi giochi di prestigio, e che il suo rifiuto di “farsi studiare” dalla scienza ufficiale vada ascritto proprio alla consapevolezza di essere in realtà un creatore d’illusioni.

Sospeso tra biografia, reportage e ricostruzione, il documentario costruisce un percorso in un certo senso “ascendente”, conducendo lo spettatore sempre più vicino al cuore di quel che la vita e il pensiero di Rol hanno significato per tutti quelli che ne sono venuti in contatto, fino a porre il quesito – per ora irrisolvibile – della vera natura delle sue facoltà. La scienza odierna, in particolare tramite la fisica dei quanti, si sta confrontando proprio in questi anni con la prospettiva di studiare i fenomeni cosiddetti “paranormali” da un’angolazione totalmente nuova, e con la possibilità di dare al “misterioso” spiegazioni plausibili. Il mondo dei fenomeni straordinari di Rol, si domanda la nostra opera, sarà forse in un giorno non lontano oggetto di studio della più avanzata tra le scienze?

{ENG}Together and through the extraordinary charismatic personality of Mr. Rol, this film-documentary sets itself the ambitious goal of showing one of the paths that lead to the “world behind the world”. The narrator opens by declaring: "Scattered in our ordinary world, there are mysterious objects and even people who are like portals to the realms of the impossible!"

In making this film, I was able to make an incredible and wonderful inner journey. Plato said: "What men intend and believe to be reality represents only an underground place, around which one can acquire a confused and uncertain knowledge."

At the end of a long nocturnal navigation, embodying for me the figure of the philosopher, the sage, the shaman, the teacher who leads the traveler on the path of wisdom, (understood as the knowledge of visible and invisible things), Mr. Gustavo Adolfo Rol led me to the understandment that beyond our material world, beyond the "cave", lie other realms, infinite and transcendent.

Inspired by the ancient wisdom of metaphysics and ancient religious traditions (such as that of the biblical tradition of King Solomon), and by investigating and experimenting with the dynamics of human "possibilities", Rol soon became famous throughout the world for the extraordinary faculties he possessed such as the power to transmute matter, to see in distant places, to read the future and the thoughts of men, to travel in time ... Truly unique in his kind and impossible to imprison in a category, in the course of his long life he shunned any form of notoriety. He did not preach doctrines, he did not ask for money, he did not seek disciples. He spoke of himself only as a researcher, an experimenter, an explorer of that vast and unknown territory that stretches between the rigor of science and the intuition of the heart. The men and women who knew him and were witnesses of what he was able to do called him from time to time a magician, a wonder worker, a thaumaturge, an individual with extraordinary and inexplicable paranormal faculties, but on his pary Rol never accepted any of these definitions, declaring that he considered what he called "his experiments" as nothing more than the practical manifestation of an innate ability that all men possess, and that - according to him - one day anyone of us will be able to connect with.

The journalist and writer Enzo Biagi in his book "E tu lo sai?" said of him: “Dr. Gustavo Adolfo Rol, a psychic capable of undertakings that have nothing normal and which are impossible to interpret. He is even able to travel back in time, to converse with entities who have reached the afterlife for centuries or to drop into a living room a cowbell with the bleating of the goat. A very heavy marble bust, without anyone moving, passed from a fireplace to the center of a table". In an interview with the journalist Renzo Allegri, author of the first monography on him at the time of an investigation into the paranormal, Rol replied: “But are you sure that I am important for your investigation? I am an ordinary person. I have nothing to do with the mediums, the healers, the spiritualists you interview. That's a world away from my mentality. My modest experiments are part of science. These are things that all men will be able to achieve in the future”. His charisma amazed some of the greatest personalities of the 20th century, artists of the caliber of Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau, Federico Fellini, politicians such as Ronald Reagan, John Kennedy, Haile Salassiè, industrialists such as Cesare Romiti, Giorgio Valletta, the Agnelli family... everyone crossed his world and had a chance to develop a friendship with him. Dino Buzzati, well-known Italian journalist and writer of the twentieth century, having known him well, in his book "The mysteries of Italy" tells several episodes and anecdotes. Rol says: "... everything I am and do, comes from there (and pointed to the sky), we are all a part of God ... And to those who ask me why I do certain experiments, I answer: I do them precisely to confirm the presence of God ...“. On another occasion Buzzati says of Rol: “It strikes in Rol, who at sixty-two looks at least ten years younger, an extraordinary and joyful vitality. I insist on the serenity and joy that emanate from him. Something beneficial radiates on others. This is the inevitable characteristic, at least according to my experience, of the rare men who have reached a high spiritual level by overcoming themselves, and consequently achieved authentic goodness. As for the face, describing it is difficult. Someone called it a 'bon vivant'. It's not true. It could be that of an Indian guru. But it could also belong to a surgeon, a bishop, a tender child. An impressive and magnetic mask is expected. None of this". The great director Federico Fellini, one of Mr. Rol's best friends, in his book "Making a film" gives this portrait: "What Rol does is so wonderful that it becomes normal (...) His eyes, Rol's eyes, one cannot look at them for too long. They are steady and luminous eyes, the eyes of a creature from another planet, the eyes of a character from a good science fiction film. When you play 'games' like his, the temptation of pride, of a certain mysterious omnipotence, must be very strong. Yet Rol knows how to reject it, he resizes himself every day to an acceptable human extent. Perhaps because he has faith and believes in God. His often desperate attempts to establish an individual relationship with the terrible forces that inhabit him, to try to define some conceptual, ideological, religious construction that allows him to tame in a partial, tolerable armistice the stormy magnetic night that invades him, cutting out and erasing the boundaries of his personality, have something pathetic and heroic".

Between the lines of this film, there is a subtle dialogue (which is intended to be constructive) between the different forms of knowledge: the scientific one and the philosophical-religious one. I intended this documentary to play on the boundaries between science and non-science and on the contamination between different languages, involving philosophers, scientists, mystics, writers and artists in a research and meditation on the great themes of existence, the representation of hope and of the spiritual unrest of man. Exploring the most advanced achievements of scientific research, my goal was to grasp the subtle connections that link frontier science to other points of view on reality such as intuition, metaphysical wisdom, the knowledge of spiritual things.

The achievements of logical positivism and the scientific method based on observation and verifiability have in a certain sense forced our society into a kind of agnosticism, and in the inability to understand the territory of experience of mysticism, of the existence of God, and of the immortality of the soul, we have been forcibly stripped of an inner world, transforming the principles of religions and metaphysics into illogical pseudo propositions. But learning to the story of a lifetime like that of Mr. Rol catapults us to a crossroad: either we raise human reason in our life as the absolute and supreme judge of truth, or we accept the existence of a different order of things, in which the intuitive experience of truth, not accessible to reflective thought, is possible. "If you went in search of it, you would not find the boundaries of the soul, though you traveled every road-so deep is its measure", said the Greek philosopher Heraclitus... The absolute objectivity of science and observable reality, the great masters of all spiritual traditions have repeated over the centuries, is but another facet of the world of illusions (like the veil of MAYA, from the Indian Sanskrit term) and in the universe of spiritual truths, there are worlds in which the apparently impossible can be given shape. That's why I wanted to subtitle the film “A world behind the world” (also taking a cue from Nietzsche's Zarathustra).

In a certain dimension, under divine inspiration, it becomes possible to penetrate the secrets of the source of matter, and understand the illusory nature of the solidification of light. Rol, in front of whose gaze objects melt and coagulate, scrutinizing the richness of his own inner manifestations and trying to bring them together in a scientific form, with a prophetic spirit tells us: "I hoped that Science would have helped me to recognize and codify these sensations of mine which I am sure every man possesses, and it will be Science itself that will reveal these faculties and promote them in all men ...".

Opening new perspectives on myth, mystery, faith, religion, imagination and reason ... all expressions of knowledge that have united people and cultures of all times and places in search of wisdom and the reason of existance, Mr. Rol invites us to become aware of the extraordinary nature of the ordinary, suggesting a profound sense of the sacred and the mysterious, and with a spirit of wonder and great respect for the possibilities that life offers us. But rather than a rational acceptance, in order to be aligned with this vision of the world and of the other worlds, it takes a dedication that starts from the heart.

Wishing you a pleasent vision of the film, I challenge you with a question: would it really be such a disaster if science admitted the inexplicable? Are we not beings in constant evolution ...? How do we know that everything that is unexplainable today, will not be so in the future?

{ITA}Insieme e attraverso la straordinaria personalità carismatica di Rol, questo film-documentario si pone l'ambizioso traguardo di far intravedere una delle vie che conducono al “mondo dietro al mondo”. Il narratore apre dichiarando: “Sparsi nel nostro mondo ordinario, ci sono oggetti e anche persone misteriose che sono come dei portali verso i regni dell’impossibile!”

Nel realizzare questo film ho potuto compiere un incredibile e meraviglioso viaggio interiore. Diceva Platone: “Ciò che gli uomini intendono e ritengono essere la realtà non rappresenta che un luogo sotterraneo, intorno al quale si può acquisire una conoscenza confusa e incerta.”

Alla fine di una lunga navigazione notturna, incarnando per me la figura del filosofo, del saggio, dello sciamano, del maestro che conduce il viandante sulla via della sapienza, (intesa come la conoscenza delle cose visibili e invisibili), il Dottor Gustavo Adolfo Rol mi ha portato alla comprensione che oltre il nostro mondo materiale, superando la “caverna”, giacciono altri regni, infiniti e trascendenti.

Ispirandosi all'antica Sapienza della metafisica e delle antiche tradizioni religiose (come quella della tradizione biblica di Re Salomone), e indagando e sperimentando le dinamiche delle “possibilità” umane, Rol divenne presto famoso in tutto il mondo per le straordinarie facoltà che possedeva quali il potere di trasmutare la materia, di vedere in luoghi lontani, di leggere il futuro e i pensieri degli uomini, di viaggiare nel tempo... Davvero unico nel suo genere e impossibile da imprigionare in una categoria, nel corso della sua lunga vita rifuggì da qualsiasi forma di notorietà. Non predicò dottrine, non chiese denaro, non cercò discepoli. Parlò di se stesso solo come di un ricercatore, uno sperimentatore, un esploratore di quel territorio vasto e sconosciuto che si stende tra il rigore della scienza e l’intuizione del cuore. Gli uomini e le donne che lo conobbero e furono testimoni di quel che era in grado di fare lo definirono di volta in volta un mago, un operatore di meraviglie, un taumaturgo, un individuo dotato di facoltà paranormali straordinarie e inspiegabili, ma per proprio conto Rol non accettò mai nessuna di queste definizioni, dichiarando di considerare quelli che chiamava “i suoi esperimenti” come nulla di più che la manifestazione pratica di una capacità innata che tutti gli uomini possiedono, e che – a detta sua – un giorno chiunque di noi sarà in grado di utilizzare.

Così il giornalista e scrittore Enzo Biagi nel suo libro E tu lo sai? Lo descriveva: “Vive a Torino il dott. Gustavo Adolfo Rol, un sensitivo capace di imprese che non hanno nulla di normale e che è impossibile interpretare. È in grado perfino di fare viaggi nel tempo, di conversare con entità che hanno raggiunto l'oltretomba da secoli o di far piombare in un salotto col belato della capra anche il suo campanaccio. Un busto di marmo pesantissimo, senza che nessuno si muovesse, passò da un caminetto al centro di un desco”. A colloquio con il giornalista Renzo Allegri, autore della prima monografia su di lui all'epoca di un inchiesta sul paranormale Rol rispondeva: “Ma è sicuro che io sia importante per la sua inchiesta? Io sono una persona qualsiasi. Non ho niente a che vedere con i medium, i guaritori, gli spiritisti che lei intervista. Quello è un mondo lontano dalla mia mentalità. I miei modesti esperimenti fanno parte della scienza. Sono cose che in un futuro tutti gli uomini potranno realizzare”. Il suo carisma meravigliò alcune tra le più grandi personalità del XX° secolo, artisti del calibro di Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau, Federico Fellini, politici come Ronald Reagan, John Kennedy, Haile Salassiè, industriali come Cesare Romiti, Giorgio Valletta, la famiglia Agnelli... tutti attraversarono il suo mondo ed ebbero la possibilità di sviluppare un'amicizia con lui. Dino Buzzati, noto giornalista e scrittore italiano del '900, avendolo conosciuto bene, nel suo libro I misteri d'Italia racconta diversi episodi e aneddoti. Dice Rol: “...tutto quello che io sono e faccio viene di là (e indicava il cielo), noi tutti siamo una parte di Dio... E a chi mi domanda perché faccio certi esperimenti, rispondo: li faccio proprio a confermare la presenza di Dio... “. In un'altra occasione Buzzati dice di Rol: “Colpisce in Rol, che a sessantadue anni ne dimostra almeno dieci di meno, una vitalità straordinaria, e gioiosa. Insisto sulla serenità e l'allegrezza che ne emanano. Qualcosa di benefico si irraggia sugli altri. È questa la caratteristica immancabile, almeno secondo la mia esperienza dei rari uomini arrivati, col superamento di se stessi, a un alto livello spirituale, e di conseguenza all'autentica bontà. In quanto alla faccia, descriverla è difficile. Qualcuno l'ha definita da 'bon vivant'. Non è vero. Potrebbe essere quella di un guru indiano. Ma potrebbe anche appartenere a un chirurgo, a un vescovo, a un tenero bambino. Ci si aspetta una maschera impressionante e magnetica. Niente di questo”. Il grande regista Federico Fellini, uno dei migliori amici di Rol, nel suo libro Fare un film ne dà questo ritratto: “Ciò che fa Rol è talmente meraviglioso che diventa normale (...) I suoi occhi, gli occhi di Rol non si possono guardare a lungo. Son occhi fermi e luminosi, gli occhi di una creatura che viene da un altro pianeta, gli occhi di un personaggio di un bel film di fantascienza. Quando si fanno 'giochi' come i suoi, la tentazione dell'orgoglio, di una certa misteriosa onnipotenza, deve essere fortissima. Eppure Rol sa respingerla, si ridimensiona quotidianamente in una misura umana accettabile. Forse perché ha fede e crede in Dio. I suoi tentativi spesso disperati di stabilire un rapporto individuale con le forze terribili che lo abitano, di cercare di definire una qualche costruzione concettuale, ideologica, religiosa, che gli consenta di addomesticare in un parziale, tollerabile armistizio la tempestosa notte magnetica che lo invade scontornando e cancellando le delimitazioni della sua personalità, hanno qualcosa di patetico ed eroico”.

Tra le righe di questo film, c'è un sottile dialogo (che vuole essere costruttivo) tra le diverse forme del sapere: quella scientifica e quella filosofico-religiosa. Ho inteso che questo documentario giocasse sui confini tra scienza e non scienza e sulla contaminazione fra linguaggi diversi, coinvolgendo filosofi, scienziati, mistici, scrittori e artisti in una ricerca e una meditazione sui grandi temi dell’esistenza, la rappresentazione della speranza e dell’inquietudine spirituale dell’uomo. Esplorando le più avanzate conquiste della ricerca scientifica il mio obbiettivo è stato quello di cogliere le sottili connessioni che legano la scienza di frontiera ad altre angolature sulla realtà quali l’intuizione, la sapienza metafisica, la conoscenza delle cose spirituali.

I traguardi raggiunti dal positivismo logico e dal metodo scientifico basato sull'osservazione e sulla verificabilità hanno in un certo senso costretto la nostra società a una specie di agnosticismo, e nell'incapacità di comprendere il territorio di esperienza del misticismo, dell'esistenza di Dio e dell'immortalità dell'anima, siamo stati spogliati forzatamente di un mondo interiore, trasformando i princìpi delle religioni e della metafisica in pseudo proposizioni illogiche. Ma ascoltare la storia di una vita come quella di Rol ci catapulta di fronte a un bivio: o ergiamo nella nostra vita la ragione umana a giudice assoluto e supremo della verità, o accettiamo l'esistenza anche di un ordine di cose diverso, in cui l'esperienza intuitiva della verità, non accessibile al pensiero riflessivo, è possibile. “Per quanto l'intelletto si spinge non potrà mai raggiungere i confini dell'anima”, diceva il filosofo greco Eraclito... L’oggettività assoluta della scienza e della realtà osservabile, hanno ripetuto nei secoli i grandi maestri di tutte le tradizioni spirituali, non è che un'altra sfaccettatura del mondo delle illusioni, (come il velo di MAYA, dal termine sanscrito indiano) e nell'universo delle verità spirituali, esistono mondi in cui all'apparentemente impossibile si può dare forma. Ecco perché ho voluto sottotitolare il film “Un mondo dietro al mondo” (prendendo anche spunto dal Zarathustra di Nietzsche).

In una certa dimensione, sotto ispirazione divina, diventa possibile penetrare i segreti della sorgente della materia, e comprendere la natura illusoria della solidificazione della luce. Rol, dinanzi al cui sguardo si sciolgono e si coagulano gli oggetti, scrutando la ricchezza delle proprie manifestazioni interiori e cercando di riunirle in una forma scientifica, con spirito profetico ci dice: “È così che ho sperato che fosse proprio la Scienza ad aiutarmi a riconoscere e codificare queste mie sensazioni che sono certo ogni uomo possiede, e sarà la Scienza stessa a rivelare queste facoltà e promuoverle in tutti gli uomini...”.

Aprendo nuove prospettive sul mito, sul mistero, sulla fede, sulla religione, sull’immaginazione e sulla ragione... tutte espressioni del sapere che hanno unito persone e culture di tutti i tempi e di tutti i luoghi alla ricerca della sapienza e del motivo di esistere, Rol ci invita a una presa di coscienza della straordinaria natura dell'ordinario, suggerendo un profondo senso del sacro e del misterioso, e con spirito di meraviglia e di grande rispetto per le possibilità che la vita ci offre. Ma piuttosto che un'accettazione razionale, per allinearsi a questa visione del mondo e degli altri mondi, ci vuole una dedizione che parte dal cuore.

Augurandovi una buona visione, vi lascio con una domanda: sarebbe davvero così un disastro se la scienza ammettesse l’inesplicabile? Non siamo esseri in continua evoluzione...? Come facciamo a sapere che tutto ciò che non è spiegabile oggi, non lo sarà in futuro?
