SYNOPSIS

{ENG}This Docu-drama offers an insight into the lives of those who, whether out of necessity or personal choice, live and work on the streets of New York. A cross-section of humanity made up of artists, prostitutes, taxi-drivers, traffic wardens, with stories of ordinary desperation but often of hope, too. The protagonists tell their own stories: Lee, who lived homeless for years, and got off the streets by writing and reporting on his experience. Nat, who makes a living by collecting and recycling bottles, at the end of each day taking them to the recycling centre which has become almost like a home to him. De La Vega, a poet-artist from Harlem, who communicates with people through the sidewalks, sending out messages inspired by synchronicity; and Nandan, the wise taxi-driver, Roland the dancer/traffic warden and Terri, the transsexual prostitute. Their stories are all “borderline”; the tales of people who survive day after day, managing to reconcile their desperation and broken dreams with courage and hope.

{ITA}Questo docu-drama apre uno squarcio sulla vita di chi per necessità e chi per propria volontà vive e lavora sulle strade di New York. Uno spaccato di umanità fatta di artisti, prostitute, taxisti, vigili, storie di ordinaria disperazione, ma, spesso, anche di speranza. A parlare sono proprio i protagonisti: Lee, ex homeless che per anni ha vissuto in quelle strade, ed è emerso dal marciapiede scrivendo e raccontando la sua esperienza, Nat che si guadagna da vivere collezionando e riciclando bottiglie e portandole alla fine della giornata al centro di riciclo dei rifiuti e che ormai per lui rappresenta quasi una casa, De La Vega, artista poeta di harlem che comunica con la gente attraverso i marciapiedi lanciando messaggi ispirandosi alla sincronicità, ma anche Nandan, il taxista saggio, Roland, il vigile ballerino e Terri, la prostituta transessuale. Le loro storie sono tutte storie ‘al limite’, il racconto di persone che sopravvivono giorno dopo giorno facendo convivere la disperazione e i sogni infranti con il coraggio e la speranza.

{ENG}New York is a city that conveys extraordinary energy. It has an overwhelming rhythm and leads you to encounter many human dimensions. I lived several years immersed in that atmosphere, it is the city where I studied and which gave back to me a lot and educated me from the point of view of human relationships. This film is my homage to the city of New York, the place where my ancestors arrived from a small Sicilian village, in search of fortune, and where my father was born and raised. It is my testimony about this city that teems with life and hope, dreams and love.

{ITA}New York è una città che trasmette un'energia straordinaria. Ha un ritmo travolgente e ti porta ad incontrarti con moltissime dimensioni umane. Ho vissuto diversi anni immerso in quell'atmosfera, è la città in cui ho studiato e che mi ha dato e istruito tantissimo dal punto di vista dei rapporti umani. Questo film è il mio omaggio alla città di New York, luogo dove approdarono i miei antenati in arrivo da un paesino della Sicilia, in cerca di fortuna, e dove è nato e cresciuto mio padre. E' la mia testimonianza su questa città che brulica di vita e di speranza, di sogni e di amore.
