{ENG}The challenge of a society set in the breathtaking mountains of the Himalaya’s against environmental degradation. Can the quest for a “glocal” way of living projected towards an “ancient future” inspire the Western economies of our planet?

{ITA}La sfida di una società laboratorio incastonata tra le spettacolari vette dell’Himalaya, alla ricerca di una via “glocale” verso un “antico futuro” può ispirare le economie occidentali del nostro pianeta?

synopsis

{ENG}Ladakh is an Indian region that is facing a deep process of transformation and cultural regeneration, constantly oscillating between its vocation of being a land of arcane and mystical traditions, and an uncontrolled progress that is destructive for the environment and is alienating its inhabitants. Brave and visionary minds are however working to overcome this dualism by proposing a virtuous mediation: preserving their identity without withdrawing into a shell, giving value to the incentives of a modernity that does not imply an anthropological mutation. Can we, as westerners, learn from this social, economical and cultural lab that is today Ladakh?

{ITA}Il Ladakh è una regione dell’India in profonda trasformazione che sta affrontando un percorso di rigenerazione culturale costantemente in bilico tra il richiamo di una tradizione arcana e uno sviluppo rampante, che mette a rischio l’ambiente e snatura i suoi abitanti. Menti coraggiose vogliono superare questo dualismo proponendo una mediazione virtuosa per restare se stessi senza chiudersi al mondo, valorizzando gli stimoli di una modernità che non implichi una mutazione antropologica. Possiamo, come Occidentali, imparare da questo laboratorio sociale, economico e culturale che è oggi il Ladakh?

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

{ENG}“Ladakh is an extraordinary place. There are legends that even unite the paths of Buddha and Christ. And people like me, who live in the globalized West, have always dreamed and seen the Himalaya’s and Tibet as a stronghold against the excesses of modernity. But the truth is the opposite, the problems of life in our modern society end up re-emerging among the most remote Himalayan mountains. Here, climate change, decadence, urbanization, and traffic pollution are, in some cases, even more brutal. Is it really the end of that magical and mystical dreamed world, full of mysteries rich in meaning? My hope is that the courageous dynamism of some visionary minds working across the platforms of culture, research and technology can break the ongoing vicious cycle and open a new way”.

While we are dealing with racial issues and a continued fight for racial equality, while we are dealing with Covid issues, we are also dealing with really big climate issues. That is going to be the issue that we are all going to be faced with in a big way, and making allies with the elements is going to be a big part of the solution. It’s not all of it, but if you love the elements they will love you. We need to build a relationship with the elements because they are speaking to us right now, and they are speaking in ways that we need to stand up and listen to. So I hope that you will open up your heart to the elements and see what happens.

{ITA}Il Ladakh è un posto straordinario. Chi come me abita nell’occidente globalizzato ha sempre sognato e visto l’Himalaya e il Tibet come una roccaforte contro gli eccessi della modernità. Ma è vero il contrario, i problemi della vita nella nostra società moderna finiscono per riproporsi tra le montagne più sperdute dell’Himalaya. Qui il cambiamento climatico, l’imbarbarimento, l’urbanizzazione, il traffico si manifestano in alcuni casi in modo anche più cruento rispetto a noi. Chissà se è davvero la fine di quel magico e mistico mondo?

Mentre abbiamo a che fare con questioni razziali e una lotta continua per l'uguaglianza razziale, mentre abbiamo a che fare con questioni di Covid, abbiamo anche a che fare con questioni climatiche davvero importanti. Questo sarà il problema che tutti noi dovremo affrontare in maniera importante, e fare alleanza con gli elementi sarà una parte importante della soluzione. Non sarà tutta la soluzione, ma se amiamo gli elementi, loro ci ameranno. Dobbiamo costruire una relazione con gli elementi perché ci stanno parlando proprio ora, e stanno parlando in modi che dobbiamo sforzarci di ascoltare. Quindi spero che aprirete il vostro cuore agli elementi e vedrete cosa succede.
